STUFFED CABBAGE LEAVES 
1 lg. green cabbage
1 lb. ground round steak
1/2 c. long grain rice, uncooked
1 med. onion, chopped & grated
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
3 c. crushed tomatoes
Pinch of baking soda

Pull cabbage apart and steam leaves just enough to bend. Let cool in a bowl. Mix together ground meat, rice, onion, 2/3 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Form into oblong balls and wrap each ball with a cabbage leaf. Secure with a toothpick. Place in a large pot with a rack in the bottom. Combine tomatoes with remaining 2/3 teaspoon of salt and remaining 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add baking soda. Pour over cabbage rolls and cook over low heat about 1 1/2 hours.
