CHOCOLATE CHIP TORTE 
1 3/4 c. flour
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. boiling water
1 c. finely cut dates
1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
3/4 c. nuts, chopped

Sift together flour, cocoa, salt and soda. Pour water over dates. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla; beat thoroughly. Stir dates and water. Add alternately with flour mixture, mixing until just smooth after each addition. Pour in greased jelly roll pan, 10"x15" and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.
