BEEF STEW 
1 lb. beef
1/4 c. chopped onion
3 tsp. salt
1 sm. bay leaf
3/4 c. diced carrots
8-10 sm. white onions
1/2 c. cold water
2 tbsp. melted fat
3 c. boiling water
1/8 tsp. pepper
Dash of thyme
3/4 c. diced potatoes
1 c. boiling water
5 tbsp. flour

Brown beef in fat in large saucepan. Add onion and saute until golden brown. Add 3 cups boiling water and seasoning; cover and simmer 1-2 hours, or until vegetables are done. Add 1 cup more boiling water. Add cold water very gradually to flour, mixing well. Add to simmering stew, stirring vigorously. Cook and stir until thickened.
