1 can lye 1 1/2 qt. water 4 lbs. grease 2 tbsp. ammonia 1/2 c. borax 1/2 c. sugar Be sure to use either 2 gallon crock or 6 quart granite pan. Be very careful with the lye as it will cause burns. Dissolve lye in 1 1/2 quarts of cold water. Lye will make the water hot. Melt grease and let cool. Add lye water to melted grease, stirring with wooden spoon. Stir until creamy. Add other ingredients. Stir until thick and pour into mold. You can use a cardboard box lined with flour sack or a granite pan. Mine is 12" x 14" x 1/2". Let get cold and solid. Cut into bars. |
