SOFT CHEWEY SUGAR COOKIES 
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Thoroughly cream together brown sugar, sugar, butter, shortening, egg and vanilla. In separate bowl, mix flour, cream of tartar and salt. Blend well and add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Shape dough into 1 inch balls, roll in sugar and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Press down center with finger. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Yields: 4 dozen cookies.
