1 c. shortening
3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 1/2 c. flour

Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients and add to mixture. On greased cookie sheet, put about 1 oz. of dough (1 large tablespoonful). Press dough flat with bottom of water glass that has been dipped in granulated sugar. Bake 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes about 2 dozen.
