WORM DIRT CAKE
This popular "novelty" cake is a hit at children's parties, especially around Halloween. You'll receive many appreciative compliments from your guests such as "Ewww, that's gross!"

It really resembles a pudding more than it does a conventional cake. If you serve it as an everyday family dessert, rather than as a fun decorative element, it's possible that your family may not understand it!

1 to 1 1/4 lb. pkg. Oreo cookies
1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
3 cups milk
1 (12 oz.) tub Cool Whip (can use chocolate)
2 (3 1/2 oz.) pkg. instant vanilla or chocolate pudding
1/2 tsp. vanilla
4 gummy worms and/or other critters

Crush Oreos. Put 1/3 of the crushed Oreos into a new, clean flower pot. Set aside.

Mix butter, cream cheese and sugar and vanilla together. Set aside.

Combine milk and pudding mix. Fold Cool Whip into the pudding.

Fold together pudding mixture and butter-cream cheese mixture.

Layer this mixture (about 1/3 of it) onto the crumbled cookies in the pot. Next, add another layer of the pudding mixture, then another layer of cookie crumbs, continuing until all ingredients are used.

As you're layering the ingredients, decoratively place several gummy worms and critters in the "soil" so they will be seen emerging. If you have a toy (clean) garden trowel, a plastic daisy, or some edible flowers, these can also be used creatively to embellish the presentation.

Chill in refrigerator for 3 to 4 hours before serving.

To add a twist I recently decorated the top using tubed white decoration frosting making the outline of a racecar track with a few plastic tonka trucks... very cute

I found that it works better if you remove the cream from the center of the Oreos. I put the oreos in a plastic ziploc bag and use the bottom of a small cup to crush them. If I don't remove the cream from the centers, everything sticks together instead of coming out in crumbles like the recipe is intended to.

I used a food processor to crush the Oreos - worked great - didn't have to remove the cream from the centers! It is a great recipe.

If you're going to take the cream center out, you might save yourself some time and just use chocolate wafers instead. =)

Is it ok to lick the cream out of the Oreo's? Or should I use a knife? The cream is the best part of the cookies! Happy Halloween All!!!! :)

Love your reply!!!

 The (Indiana) replies:
Use a knife. If you're making it for a crowd, licking all the cream out would be unsanitary.

I have used the "lower" fat/calorie alternatives to the ingredients and it works out just the same... not that it lowers the "naughty" things THAT much... but it might make that little voice of "OH NO, I CANNOT EAT THAT!" in your head quiet. =-)

I make this year round. I put it in a clean flower pot with artificial flowers for garnish & serve with a trowel.

This year for Halloween, I threw in a few (washed) plastic skulls and bones. The kids loved finding them! I also used the oreos as headstones.

I make this for my friends who are turning 50, using gummy worms, and get "Older Than Dirt" plates and napkins, etc. They love it! and it tastes good too! I make it in a throw away pan, setting it in a toy wheelbarrow, and serve it with a toy trowel.

I made this for my sisters' halloween party years ago. I covered the gummy worms with the crushed oreos and had them coming out of the dirt top. When I delivered it to her (complete with a spider plant in the dirt, which was in a plastic bag that you could not see) I told her I made it for a centerpiece for her party. Then I proceeded to "notice" the worm and remarked, "Oh dear a worm" which I took out and ate right in front of her. She about fainted! It was a great trick!!!

I plan on making the dirt cake, and putting in in a large Tonka dump truck!! I will line it with saran wrap. I have worms and slugs for extra fun. I also bought the construction cake toppers from a local bakery. I can't wait to see how it looks!!
