GINGERBREAD APPLE CAKE 
1/2 c. water
1 c. molasses
3 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 c. melted shortening

Apple Mixture Between Layers:

1 qt. apples, mashed and cooked
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cinnamon

Combine water and molasses. Sift all dry ingredients and stir into water and molasses. Add the melted shortening. Blend thoroughly and pour into 4 well-greased and floured baking pans. After cakes have cooled, remove from pans and place apple mixture between each layer. To make apple mixture blend together apples, sugar, brown sugar, allspice and cinnamon. This cake may also be served plain without the apple mixture.
