1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened
1/2 c. shortening (Crisco)
2 2/3 c. sugar
5 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
3 c. sifted Martha White cake flour or Martha White plain flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 c. milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 3 (9") round or 2 (9") square cake pans. Cream butter and shortening until fluffy; add sugar gradually, beating occasionally. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after addition. Beat in vanilla. Sift together dry ingredients, alternately beat into creamed mixture with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until cake pulls away from sides of pan. Cool and frost as desired.
