DATE AND NUT LOAF 
Sprinkle 1 teaspoon baking soda over date mixture and let stand for 10 minutes.

Cream together 2 tablespoons butter and 1 cup sugar. Add 1 egg. Sift together 1 3/4 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add this alternately (3 times) with date mixture to butter, sugar and egg mixture. Stir well.

Add 1 teaspoon vanilla and 2/3 cup chopped walnuts. Stir and pour into floured loaf pan (9 x 5 inch). Bake in 325 degree oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until done. Let stand at room temperature for 24 hours before cutting.
