KENTUCKY HORSE RACE PIE
The next time you get a hankering for Louisville, Kentucky Bluegrass style chocolate nut pie, don't rush out to the bakery shop or the race track.

Using all the best ingredients, you can whip up an improved version of this Kentucky Derby Day treat right in your home kitchen. So don your derby cap, rev up that mixer, and place your bet on the best pie to ever grace the winner's circle!

I recently found this recipe scribbled on a vintage manila card, in an old recipe box straight from Louisville, Kentucky. It sat alongside a second version of the same recipe which I will also include here.

Ms. Wakefield's recipe box contained an extensive collection of hand-written treasures from Louisville, Kentucky spanning several decades beginning in the early '40's. Ms. Wakefield also had a recipe or two published in American Home Magazine.

Don't resign this festive pie to Kentucky Derby Day alone! We serve this on Thanksgiving and Christmas, too.

Enjoy!

Version I:

2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, melted
3 to 4 tablespoons Kentucky Bourbon
1/4 cup corn starch
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate bits

Combine the eggs, sugar, melted butter and bourbon. Add the cornstarch to the mixture, blending in slowly.

Stir in the pecans and chocolate bits. Pour into an unbaked 9 inch pie shell.

Bake in a pre-heated 350°F oven for approximately 45 minutes.

Version II:

1 1/2 cups sugar
6 tablespoons flour
6 eggs, beaten by hand
1 1/2 cups butter, melted
1/3 cup Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips, stir in
1 1/2 cups walnuts, chopped

Combine ingredients and pour into two unbaked pie shells.

Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.

Makes two pies.

I assure you, only Maker's Mark is suitable for &*$%@ pie.

My "Run for the Roses" pie uses light corn syrup, and I find that Jack Daniels tastes great in my version.
 #189991
 Karen Rutledge (Texas) replies:
I'm a Jack drinker, this would be great made with Honey Jack Daniels.
 #23358
 Sandra Finch says:
Version 2 is the one I have always liked. For a little smoother taste, try Canadian whiskey.

 Southernmapart (South Carolina) says:
C'mon folks. If you're gonna make a Kentucky pie, use Kentucky bourbon.
   #68277
 Jadonone (Indiana) replies:
I have to agree with Southernmapart (South Carolina). It just HAS to be Kentucky Bourbon... nothing else will do.

 Trudy (Georgia) says:
This pie was great with the pecans and of course Jack

 Carolin71 D. (Ohio) says:
This pie (the second version) was the best I've ever had of this pie. It's so much better than anything you can buy! You must make this at home.

 Kyderbyfan (Kentucky) says:
Is version II of the pie recipe the best richest tasting of the two because of the extra generous ingredients? I would like to achieve a fantastic blend of the Bourbon and the chocolate. This is my first attempt baking the pie for a KY Derby party, and I want a winner! Thanks.

 Melanie (United States) says:
Want to make this for our 4H horse club "Derby Party" - what can I substitute for the bourbon ?
 #33807
 Kystorms (Kentucky) replies:
The bourbons "proof" drops when this pie is baked. I serve this to my family of small children..
 #33818
 GaPeaches (Georgia) replies:
Melanie, you could try a Brandy extract flavoring, its not the same taste wise, but it does have less alcohol. But honestly, when you cook with alcohol (regardless of type), the heat removes the alcohol anyway, it just leaves behind the great flavor.

 The mom (New York) replies:
I've made this several times with the bourbon and several without, we really can't tell a difference. I might add just a bit more vanilla. It is a great pie.
 #67917
 Kirsten (Colorado) replies:
I just put this pie in the oven, I have yet to taste it baked. My mom said the batter was delicious, though!

Melanie, I just used one teaspoon of vanilla and two teaspoons of water for each tablespoon of bourbon.
 #68050
 Cat (Tennessee) replies:
Melanie - you could probably leave it out entirely - maybe vanilla for taste? It's basically a pecan pie with chocolate chips.

 Carol (Ohio) says:
I used Makers Mark 46 whiskey for the pie and also for a chaser. All is well in the world. One issue with version 2 was the volume. I cut the recipe in half, except for the Whiskey, and still filled two pie crusts. Not a bad thing. All in all it was great.

 Pauline (Indiana) says:
Pure vanilla - ONLY

Hi - I was looking for a $#*@#!$ (Kentucky Horse Race) pie recipe and came across this one and printed it out. As I was reading it I saw it was a recipe of a Ms. Wakefield of Louisville. Are you any relation to the Wakefields of the Bardstown area? My Great Grandmother was Roxy Wakefield and I know a couple of her kids moved to Louisville (and would have been there in the 40s) - I'm just wondering because I think that would be great if these end up being family recipes!

 Diane (Kentucky) says:
My daughter loves this, but with white chocolate chips. YUM!

 Sharon (Ohio) says:
This pie is wonderful with 90 proof Ancient Age. My family loves this pie and the pie maker. It is best with English Walnuts.

 Janice (Alaska) says:
This is just like the $!@$* (Kentucky Horse Race) Pie my mom would always make for us down in Kentucky in the early 50's. Thank you for sharing this recipe because it brings me back to the good old days!

Keeneland Spring Meet is racing, next track stop is Churchill Downs for The Oaks and The Derby. We always eat Kentucky ham and biscuits, cold grilled asparagus, deviled eggs, cold multi-bean salad and KY $#@&* Horse Race Pie! We brew iced tea with mint, make lemonade, and have plenty of KY Bourbon Whiskey on hand. It is time to finalize your menus and guests lists, and mail invitations. Recruit a friend to run the betting pool. Enjoy the Day! (Remember Drink Responsibly!)
