BORROWED BEAN SOUP 
1 lb. pinto beans or northern beans
1 lb. split peas
12 c. water
1 lg. onion, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
3 carrots, sliced
2 tbsp. salt
8 c. tomato juice
Ham hock and diced ham
2 tbsp. chili powder
1 green pepper, diced

Soak beans and peas in water for 5 hours. Add the rest of the ingredients to beans and simmer 3 hours minimum.
