STEP 1: MERINGUE:
6 egg whites
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 can lemon Comstock pie filling
1 1/2 c. whipping cream
Sugar to taste
1 tsp. vanilla
Sliced almonds or walnuts
Step 1: Meringue: 6 egg whites beaten until frothy. Add 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar, pinch salt. Add sugar (1 1/2 cups) very slowly. Pour into greased 9x13 pan. Smooth top until level. Place in 425 degree preheated oven. Close door, turn off heat and leave in oven overnight or at least 5 hours. No peeking.
Step 2: 1 can lemon pie filling (Comstock) over meringue - smooth.
Step 3: 1 1/2 cups whipped cream with sugar to taste, 1 teaspoon vanilla. Smooth over lemon layer. Sliced almonds or walnuts on top, optional. Refrigerate until cool. Serves 15 people.
