GRANDMA'S STRAWBERRY SHORT CAKE 
3 c. flour
2 c. sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
1/4 c. butter
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 qt. strawberries, cherries or blueberries
Milk

Mix together flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. Add vanilla, soft butter, and berries. Add enough milk to make a stiff batter, that is very thick. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes, or until toothpick or knife comes out clean.

Something I learned from this recipe is to use the deepest 9 x 12 or 9 x 15 cake pan with a high rim. This makes a large heavy shortcake that is good served with either milk or Cool Whip. This is truly a good old fashioned shortcake.
