3/4 c. sugar
1/3 c. butter
1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. all purpose flour
1/4 c. milk
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. chopped walnuts or pecans
1 tbsp. sugar (opt.)
2 tbsp. chopped walnuts or pecans (opt.)

In a medium saucepan combine the 3/4 cup sugar, butter, and cocoa powder. Cook and stir until butter is melted. Remove pan from heat.

Add egg and vanilla to mixture in saucepan. Using a wooden spoon lightly beat just until combined. Add flour, milk, baking powder and baking soda. Beat until well combined. Stir in the 1/2 cup nuts.

Spread batter in a greased 9"x9"x2" baking pan. If desired, for sugar nut topping, sprinkle batter with the 1 tablespoon sugar and then the 2 tablespoons nuts. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack. Cut into bars. Makes 16 or 24 bars.
