3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. soda
1 (#303) applesauce (2 c.)
2 3/4 c. sifted flour
2 eggs
2 c. chopped nuts
2 c. sliced dates
1 c. glace cake mix
1 (6 1/2 oz.) jar glace cherries

Combine shortening, sugar, eggs and spices in bowl, beat until fluffy. Add applesauce and dry ingredients gradually. Beat smooth. Fold in nuts and fruits. Bake in greased loaf pans. Bake in slow oven 300 degrees 1 1/4 - 2 hours. Test by working with fingertips. If no imprints left in cake is done. Cool on rack. If desired wrap in cloth dampened with sherry then foil. Let age 2-3 weeks.
