Dried fruit with no preservatives added, prunes, apricots, apples, raisins, and pears for example. (Omit dates and figs). Place about a pound in a large saucepan and cover with water. Add a thin-sliced, well-scrubbed lemon or orange. Bring to a boil and simmer about one hour.
