SPICE CAKE WITH MAPLE FROSTING
 

CAKE:

2 c. + 2 tbsp. flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. clove
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs

Mix dry ingredients. Add shortening and milk. Mix. Add vanilla and eggs. Mix. Pour into desired cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees until done. Cool.

FROSTING:

1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. maple flavor
1/4 c. butter
1/4 c. milk

In 2 quart saucepan stir together over low heat all ingredients. Bring to boil without stirring and boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and beat until mixture is thick enough to spread.

VARIATION: Leave out spices in cake and use broiled icing.
