Place ingredients into bread machine in order given by manufacturer.
If making rolls, set machine to dough cycle. When cycle is done, remove dough and shape into any roll shape.
If a glaze (shiny top) is desired, make an egg glaze by beating together 1 egg with 4 tsp. water. Brush glaze over shaped rolls. Alternatively, rolls may be brushed with cream. For a soft top, brush rolls with melted butter.
If desired, sprinkle glazed rolls with poppy or sesame seeds.
Let rolls rise until doubled in bulk in a warm, draft-free place.
Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 10 to 20 minutes; larger rolls will bake for the longer time.
