OLD FASHIONED YEAST BREAD
 

1 c. milk

2 tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. salt
2 1/2 tbsp. shortening

Cool to lukewarm. Measure into another bowl 1 cup lukewarm water; sprinkle in 1 package dry or compressed yeast. Let stand until dissolved; stir. Add lukewarm milk mixture. Add and stir in 3 cups sifted Gold Medal flour. Beat until smooth. Add and stir in additional 3 cups flour.

Turn dough out on floured board. Knead. Place in greased bowl, brush with melted shortening. Cover with cloth; let rise in warm place until double in bulk. Punch down and divide in half. Shape into loaves and place in greased bread pans 7 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 2 3/4 inch. Cover with clean towel. Let rise again in warm place until double in bulk. Then bake at 400 degrees about 35 to 40 minutes.
