FAVORITE SOUTHERN MEAT ROLL

PASTRY:

2 c. flour
1 c. shortening
4 1/2 slices American cheese (cheddar)
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
Cold water

Sift and measure flour, cut fat into dry ingredients until like coarse cornmeal. Break egg into measuring cup, beat slightly; fill cup to 1/2 full with water; mix well. Place on lightly floured board. Knead, roll to 1/3" thickness into rectangular sheet. Spread with beef mixture (dipping beef out of sauce). Roll as for jelly roll. Make 4 slits in top of roll and insert a slice of cheese. Bake in hot oven, 400 degrees for 30 minutes, remove from oven.

SAUCE:

2 c. ground beef or 3/4 lb.
1 c. tomato soup
2 tbsp. chopped pepper
1 tsp. chili powder
1/4 c. catsup
2 tbsp. minced onion
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

Before making pastry brown hamburger and make sauce. Using slotted spoon dip out meat mixture leaving sauce in pan. Let both cool while you make and roll out pastry. Don't roll to thin. Spread meat mixture on rectangular pastry and roll as for jelly roll. With kitchen shears, cut 4 slits in top of roll. Put cheese slices in slits. Bake as directed above. Serve with left over sauce. If not enough sauce you can add 1/2 can tomato soup. Delicious.
