1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 egg
2 c. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. soda
1 1/2 c. apple sauce
1/2 c. nuts or raisins or some of both

Cream shortening, sugar and egg. Add dry ingredients alternately with applesauce. Add nut meats and raisins. Makes one 8x9-inch cake. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.
