ORANGES IN RED WINE

1 c. dry red wine
1 c. water
3/4 c. sugar
1 cinnamon stick
2 whole cloves
2 slices lemon
6 to 8 oranges

Combine and bring to a boil everything but the oranges. Simmer 3 minutes and then keep hot. Meanwhile peel the oranges, including the white pith. It's really best to use a sharp knife. Reserve skins. Slice the oranges and put into syrup. Cut white part away from some of the skin and julienne a couple of tablespoons worth of the skin. Throw the strips in with the oranges and chill. The recipe calls for red wine, but I have used white wine and find it just as delicious. It is also more colorful.
