Soften butter in a large mixing bowl. Blend in rolled oats and sugar. Add flour, baking soda, ground cloves and cinnamon. Stir in currants and milk; mix well. Shape into small balls about 1 inch in diameter.
Place on greased baking sheets, about 3 inches apart, as they will flatten to make thin rich cookies. Bake in moderate oven (350°F.) for about 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from baking sheets and cool.
Makes about 3 dozen.
