Sift together 3 cups sifted flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cream 1 1/2 cup butter flavored Crisco until light and fluffy. Add 2 cups brown sugar creaming well. Add 1 cup white sugar and cream until very light.
Beat in 5 large eggs one at a time. Add sifted dry ingredients alternating with 1 cup sweet milk. Add 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Fold in 1 cup chopped black walnuts or pecans. (Shake a bit of the flour over nuts to keep them from sinking to the bottom). Pour into a 10 inch tube pan which has been greased and floured. Bake 325 degrees for 1 3/4 to 2 hours. Cool in pan about 10 minutes before turning onto wire rack to cool.
If using pecan nuts Walnut Flavoring can be added.
