QUEEN ELIZABETH CAKE
 

1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. soda
1 c. boiling water

1 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter (butter)
1 beaten egg
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/2 c. nuts

Pour boiling water over chopped dates and soda. Let stand while remaining ingredients are mixed, in usual manner. Cream sugar and butter. Add beaten egg and salt. Add sifted flour gradually. Add nuts. Bakes 35 minutes at 350 degrees in 9 x 12 inch pan.

ICING:

5 tbsp. brown sugar
5 tbsp. cream
2 tbsp. butter (butter)

Boil together for 3 minutes. Spread on cake. Sprinkle with nuts or coconut.

NOTE: This recipe is not to be passed on, but must be sold for charitable purposes. It is supposed to be the only cake the queen makes herself in her own kitchen.
