Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Rub side and bottom of shallow 1 1/2 quart round, oven proof dish with garlic. Grease with 1 teaspoon butter. Arrange half of potatoes in dish. Sprinkle with half of cheese. Put another layer of potatoes, use rest of cheese. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
In a medium bowl, beat eggs and cream and nutmeg until blended. Pour over potatoes, dot with butter. Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes or until potatoes are bubbly and tender. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Makes 6 to 8 servings. I parboil my potatoes for 5 minutes before putting them in the dish.
