2 c. bread cubes (3 slices), crust trimmed 1/2 lb. sharp Cheddar cheese, cubed 1/2 lb. bacon, cooked & crumbled (ham or shrimp may be substituted) 1/4 c. butter, melted 1/2 lb. whole fresh mushrooms 3 lg. eggs 2 c. milk 1 tsp. prepared mustard 1/4 tsp. salt Place 1/2 of bread cubes in a 1 1/2 quart casserole. Layer 1/2 of cheese, bacon and butter. Repeat layers and arrange mushrooms on top. Beat eggs, milk, mustard and salt and pour over the layered mixture. Set casserole in pan of hot water. Bake uncovered at 300 degrees for 1 1/2 hours. NOTE: This is better if prepared in advance and refrigerated overnight until baking time. Marie does not set in hot water because she likes a hard crust instead of custard. |
