ITALIAN BREAD STICKS
 

1 pkg. active dry yeast
2/3 c. warm water
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. sugar
2 c. sifted flour
1/4 c. soft shortening
1 egg, unbeaten
Sesame or poppy seeds
Soft butter

In large bowl sprinkle yeast into 2/3 cup warm water; stir until dissolved. Add salt, sugar, 1 cup flour and shortening. Beat until smooth, mix in the rest of the flour.

Knead on floured surface, about 5 minutes. Place in large bowl; cover with towel; let rise in warm place 1 hour or until double in size. Start heating oven to 375 degrees.

Punch down dough, then cut into 28 pieces. Roll each into sticks 8 inches long. On greased cookie sheets, place 1 inch apart. Beat egg with 1 tablespoon water, brush on sticks; sprinkle with seeds.

Bake 18 to 20 minutes; or until golden. Serve with soft butter. Makes 28 sticks.
