OVEN SWISS STEAK
 

1 1/2 lb. round steak
3 tbsp. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. shortening
1 (16 oz.) can tomatoes, cut up
1 sm. onion, sliced
1 stalk celery, sliced
1 med. carrot, thinly sliced
1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
Hot cooked rice or noodles

Cut meat into 6 servings. Combine flour and salt; pound 2 tablespoons of the flour into meat. In a 10" skillet, brown meat on both sides in hot shortening. Transfer meat to a 12" x 7 1/2" x 2" baking dish. Stir remaining flour mixture into pan drippings in skillet. Stir in undrained tomatoes, onion, celery, carrot and Worcestershire sauce. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir 1 to 2 minutes more. Pour over meat in baking dish. Bake, uncovered in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour 20 minutes or until meat is tender. Serve with hot, cooked rice or noodles.
