For custard, in a heavy medium saucepan combine the eggs, milk and sugar. Cook and stir over medium heat. Continue cooking until the mixture coats a meal spoon. Remove saucepan from heat. Cool at once by placing the pan in a sink or bowl of ice for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in vanilla.
Meanwhile, beat whipping cream until soft peaks form. Fold whipped cream into cooled custard. Transfer custard to a bowl. Cover surface with clear plastic wrap to keep a skin from forming. Chill up to 4 hours.
Before serving: Place strawberries in individual dessert dishes. Spoon custard atop. Garnish with chocolate curls, if desired. Serve immediately. Makes 6 servings.
