3 c. flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 c. shortening 1/4 c. milk Or you can use Pillsbury pie crust mix (2 boxes) for 8 dumplings. INSIDE APPLES: 8 apples 1 tsp. butter 1 tsp. sugar Cinnamon SYRUP: 1 c. water 1/2 c. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tbsp. butter Have pan ready that will hold 8 dumplings without crowding. Spread 1/4 cup butter in bottom of pan. Pare and core apples. Keep apples whole. Pastry: Mix dry ingredients as for pie crust crumbs. Add 1/4 cup milk to make dough. Divide pastry into 8 balls and roll out. Put an apple on each piece of dough. Put 1 teaspoon butter, 1 teaspoon sugar into cavity of each apple. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Moisten edge of dough with a little water. Fold up dough around apples and press lightly to seal. Bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes. While dumplings are baking put 1 cup water in saucepan. Add 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 tablespoon butter. Bring to a boil. Pour around dumplings for the last 10 minutes of baking. |
