2 c. brown sugar
1 c. either butter
2 eggs
3 3/4 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. warm water
1/2 c. white sugar
1 tbsp. flour
Mix together dry. Add 1 cup cold water a little at a time. Add 1 cup dates, cut up fine. Boil until nice and thick, keep stirring so it won't burn or flour won't lump. Take off stove and let stand a few minutes. Add pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla. This filling can be made a day ahead if you wish.
Drop dough by teaspoon. Wet spoon and make a nest in dough, drop 1/2 teaspoon filling in nest, then drop 1/4 teaspoon of dough on top of filling. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 10 minutes, no longer. Makes 5 or 6 dozen. Keeps well in tight container.
