KOURABIEDES (GREEK SUGAR COOKIES)

1 lb. sweet butter
1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 jigger whiskey
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg yolk
4 c. flour, sifted
3 c. confectioners sugar, sifted

Beat butter and sugar until creamy, about 5 minutes. Add egg yolk, vanilla, and whiskey until well blended. Remove from beater and gradually add sifted flour to make a soft dough. Knead well. Using about 1 tablespoon of cookie dough, make shapes (circles, crescents, ovals are traditional). Place on ungreased cookie sheet 1 inch apart. Bake in oven at 350 degrees until very lightly browned. These cookies rise only slightly. Allow to cool for two minutes before removing from baking sheet. Sift confectioners sugar on a large sheet of waxed paper. Place the baked cookies on the sugar and sift more sugar on top. Cool. Makes 5 dozen.
