SOUTHERN LANE CAKE
 

1/2 c. butter, room temperature
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 c. plus 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
1 3/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. milk
4 eggs

Beat butter until fluffy. Gradually beat in sugar. Add vanilla. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add flour mixture alternately with milk to butter mixture.

Beat egg whites until stiff. Fold whites into batter. Divide batter between two 9 inch butter round pans lined with wax paper. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until done. Remove from rack. Let stand 5 minutes. Invert onto racks. Remove paper. Cool.

LANE CAKE FROSTING:

6 egg yolks. lightly beaten
3/4 c. plus 2 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
6 tbsp. butter
3/4 c. each coarsely chopped pecans, raisins, cherries & shredded coconut
1 c. whipping cream, whipped
1/4 c. rye or bourbon whiskey (do not omit)
