DANISH PASTRY APPLE BARS
 

2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
1 egg yolk (milk to make 2/3 c.)
1 c. cornflakes, crushed
8-10 med. apples
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 egg whites

Cut shortening into flour and salt. Add milk and egg yolk. Blend with fork. Roll 1/2 of dough to fill 10 1/2 x 15 1/2 inch cookie sheet. Sprinkle bottom crust with cornflakes. Peel and slice apples and place over crust and flakes. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Roll out other half of dough and place on top. Pinch edges. Beat egg whites until stiff and brush over crust. Bake at 400 degrees for 60 minutes.

FROSTING:

1 tbsp. water
1 c. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla

While warm, frost with frosting mixture. Cut into bars. Freezes well.
