MERINGUE COOKIES
 

2 egg whites
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. sugar
1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate bits
1/4 c. nut meats

Combine first four ingredients. Beat until soft peaks form. Add sugar slowly. Beat until stiff. Fold in chocolate bits and nuts. Drop from teaspoon onto cookie sheet covered with brown paper. Bake in 300 degree oven about 25 minutes. Turn off oven and leave meringues in for 25 to 30 minutes. They are easier to remove from paper if that is done. Cookies will still be warm.
