SPICED COCKTAIL NUTS

1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3/8 cup cornstarch
6 tablespoons cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons allspice
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons cold water
1 egg white
1-2 lbs. mixed nuts

Mix the sugar, salt, cornstarch and spice together until well combined. Place in a shallow pan.

Add cold water to the egg white and beat slightly. Dip the nutmeats in the egg and water. Drain and drop them separately into the spiced sugar. Roll them lightly in this mixture and then place the pan containing the nuts and the spiced mixture in the oven.

Bake at 250°F for two hours; remove from oven and sift the sugar from the nuts.

Note: Any type of salt can be used, but popcorn salt is well suited for this recipe if you have it available. For an extra spicy kick, mix 1/4 teaspoon Morton's Hot Salt with 3/4 teaspoon salt and substitute this for the amount listed in the ingredients).

Variation: Substitute walnut or pecan halves, cashews or macadamia nuts in place of the mixed nuts.
