1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 c. shortening
5 egg yolks
3 tsp. baking powder
1 1/4 c. milk
5 egg whites
1 c. 4X sugar (confectioners')
1/2 c. butter
3 c. sifted flour (all-purpose)
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
Sift the granulated sugar and confectioners' sugar together into a large bowl. Cream well with shortening and butter. Add the egg yolks and beat well. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt; add alternately with the milk and vanilla to the creamed mixture.
Beat the egg whites until stiff and fold into the batter. Pour into 3 greased and 9 inch cake pans and bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Frost with Three layer Chocolate Icing.
