WAR CAKE
 

2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. seeded raisins
2 tbsp. lard
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Pinch salt
2 c. hot water
Nuts and fruit citrin mix as desired
3 c. flour
1 tsp. soda

Substitute butter

Mix fruit and nuts in a large bowl with the flour; put aside. Bring ingredients to a good boil to blend well; cool down, then pour over the fruits, nuts and flour; mix well. Pour into loaf pans (greased). Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.

This cake recipe goes back to the first World War. It was made with dried fruits and lard. It's very simple but so very good. A good fruit cake for Christmas!
