The following recipe is terrific for children.

1/2 c. shortening
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

1 c. sifted flour
1/8 tsp. salt

Roll into 1 inch balls, dip into slightly beaten egg whites. Roll in finely chopped nuts. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Make thumb print in middle of each cookie. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 13 minutes. Add half a cherry for decoration. (Yields: 2 dozen.)
